Xemxija promenade needs finishing touches

In order to expand on the subject of the refurbishing of the Xemxija promenade, as per Richard Stagno Navarra's letter (April 9), I would like to point out the following: There is more than one pedestrian crossing that has not yet been completed.

In order to expand on the subject of the refurbishing of the Xemxija promenade, as per Richard Stagno Navarra's letter (April 9), I would like to point out the following:

There is more than one pedestrian crossing that has not yet been completed. Instead of waiting for pelican lights to be installed, can we at least spare some paint and a couple of signs? That is, unless the roads department or the local council cares to wake up and implement the whole lot.

The refurbishing done has taken almost four years and still the area, although improved, is in a shabby state. Decorative lighting is finally being installed but the railings do need a coat of paint, the main road needs a little maintenance, and the area behind the ice-cream kiosk at Pwales beach is a reminder of a jungle. Are we planning for a summer job, in order to keep away much needed tourists?

Can this "jungle" be proposed for the planting of tress with the help of the 34U campaign and be given a general face-lift? I know that part of this area is used by Scout groups in summer for camping, but I believe that if the necessary collaboration is sought and achieved, the area may be used by both the general public and other organisations for recreation.

Have we forgotten that under the partly refurbished promenade there is another promenade, literally 12 inches above sea level that is crying out for a little bit of maintenance? If a few parts were added, one may easily walk from the Veccja jetty to the Fekruna jetty. Thus new berthing spaces may be created for the fishermen and for pleasure boats, but at the same time creating a promenade which sits away from traffic and associated fumes and is safer for children and animals.

Also, may the council enlighten us on whether the balconies created in the stretch from Veccja to the Xemxija roundabout are going to be furnished with benches? It looks like that was the purpose for which they were designed.

It needs to be kept in mind that Bugibba and Qawra are becoming choked with development. Xemxija is an ideal place for those who wish to have a quiet walk, with less traffic and commercial establishments, thus an easy alternative to smog, noise and overcrowding, allowing one to truly relax and enjoy the summer cool evening breeze.

Also, a local council notice board for this area could keep residents informed, as well be of assistance to tourists in the area. What about putting up a map of the Xemxija area, so that tourists are also enticed to visit the heritage walk up on Xemxija ridge?
