The German Company JV Haase, which is responsible, with the Vassallo Group, for the rehabilitation of Malta's three closed landfills and a specialised project at the Sant Antnin Waste Recycling Plant, has been awarded a major waste treatment plant project by the City of Manchester.
Haase has been awarded a contract to build three of five mechanical biological waste treatment plants with its consortium partner Clarke Energy and the British waste organisation GMWDA.
Manchester councillor Neil Swannick said that as a result of this project Manchester would become "world class in its handing of municipal waste".
Hasse's job in Malta involves the control of aerial emissions and the initial rehabilitation of the three formerly uncontrolled landfill sites in Maghtab, Wied Fulija and Qortin, Gozo.
It has also been given responsibility by Wasteserv for Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) at Sant Antnin. This process will treat waste to produce energy and the residue from this waste will be further treated for agricultural purposes.
MBT is one of four specialised processes to be carried out at the plant. The others are the building and construction of the plant, the mechanical treatment plant, and the material recovery facility which will treat dry recyclable waste collected from the various bring-in and civic amenity sites.
The application process for Sant Antnin began in May 2003 and the full development permit was issued last December.
