Kercem mayor Joe Grima gave The Sunday Times an insight into the council's work plan that will be implemented over the next three years.
The priority, he said, is the infrastructure of the town, particularly the construction of new roads. A big project involving the widening of the dangerous part of Dr Anton Calleja that joins with Triq Qasam San Pawl will be carried out in collaboration with the Gozo Ministry.
The project will also include the completion of the water culvert that will be connected between Triq Qasam San Pawl and St Peter and St Paul Street, solving the problem of flooding in the town centre. The road will be tarmacked.
Other roads that are to be surfaced with tarmac are Triq il-Horg, Triq is-Summien and Wenzu Mintoff Street.
A garden is being planned out for the housing estate area in Triq il-Horg, and apart from serving as a recreational area will be able to host activities and entertainment. The project will be carried out with the help of the Ministry of the Family and Social Solidarity and the Ministry for Gozo.
The building of the civic centre in Orvieto Square will continue. The first floor will be given specific attention as it will host the council offices, a police station, a clinic, and a library.
Also to be completed are the rubble wall in the road leading to the Ghadira ta' San Raflu as well as other roads around the village. A rubble wall will also be put up in December 13 Street and Triq Qasam San Gorg. These streets will also be revamped.
The Construction and Maintenance Unit will carry out work on the building and restoration of pavements.
Skola Sajf will continue as in previous years.
Particular importance will continue to be given to culture - cultural tours will be organised around Gozo and Malta. Two main activities are Kercem Day and St Lucia Day.
