Pupils at Little Angels Junior School, Birkirkara, are this year researching, retelling and sharing myths and legends about dragons and mythical beasts in literature through various subjects such as languages, art/craft, ICT, drama and social studies.
This activity forms part of a Comenius project that the school is involved in with partner schools in England, Germany, Cyprus, Poland, Spain (Canary Islands), Romania, Hungary and Belgium.
The pupils will be producing a book with their own stories and drawings about dragons. With the help of their teachers, they will also be exploring this dragon theme through drama and will be producing a video of the children acting. The mascot for this project is Dumink the dragon.
The project, entitled "Our European Cultural Heritage" aims to develop in all the pupils an awareness of the diversity of cultures within the countries of the partner schools.
The pupils communicate regularly by means of e-mails every month as well as goody boxes, which are sent every month by the different schools.
Bernadette Stivala, the school head, said that all students and teachers in the school are involved in different ways in the project.
Parents are also regularly informed about all the project activities by means of the school newspaper, The Little Times, as well as through the school Website.
A meeting for all the partner schools was held in Munich, Germany, last October and another meeting for all partners is to be held in Cyprus next month.
