Violent husband jailed, fined

A man was yesterday imprisoned for two weeks and fined Lm50 for threatening to kill his wife and her parents earlier this year.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman found 26-year-old Charles Brincat, of Tarxien, guilty of threatening to kill his wife and her parents and with having been in the illegal possession of a knife on January 7.

The court heard that on the day of the incident the woman was at her parents' house when Mr Brincat turned up in a violent mood.

The father went outside to speak to the accused, told him to leave and walked him to the car. Later, Mr Brincat was seen carrying a big knife and the police were called in.

During his arraignment soon after the incident, in January, Mr Brincat had been granted bail on condition he did not approach his wife.

Two months later he was jailed for a month for breaching bail conditions when he went near his wife's residence.

Magistrate Hayman yesterday jailed him for two weeks and fined him Lm50 with regard to the charges of threatening his wife and her parents. She also bound Mr Brincat not to approach his wife and her parents for a year against a Lm100 fine in default.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.

Lawyer Ludvic Caruana was defence counsel.
