We are two regular tourists to Malta. We have now been coming since 1982 but owing to our illnesses this will be the last visit as my wife is almost blind and I use a mobility scooter.

February 19 this year was our 25th wedding anniversary so we were here to say goodbye to all the true friends we have met over these years. But now they will just have to come to us every three years in August.

I would like to mention the following incident that occurred when we were travelling up to Qawra. When making our way back to Bugibba, some Maltese people approached us from behind and when they heard us speaking they asked if we were Scottish.

We then found out they had just come from Mass as they had lost their twin son on holiday in Spain.

We both expressed that we felt their grief, and hoped that through time the Lord would ease their pain. We felt their pain in our hearts for the remaining days of our holidays.

We will never forget our last trip to Malta, and how a Maltese couple in their time of sorrow found the time to speak to two unknown tourists. We know that they visit Scotland and if ever they pass our way, as the Scots say, "our door will always be open to them". We wish them peace in their sorrow and remembrance in our hearts.

Our thanks Malta, and goodbye.
