A Briton who was found in possession of ecstasy and cannabis told the police he needed the drugs for health reasons and did not intend to sell the substance, a court heard yesterday.

Police Inspector Victor Aquilina told Magistrate Miriam Hayman that Steven Charles Bartram, 50, was arrested on March 26 at the sea port when officers found 134 ecstasy pills and cannabis in the car he was using.

In a statement to the police, Mr Bartram admitted that the drugs were his but insisted they were for his personal use and that he took the drugs because he suffered from depression.

Lawyers Joseph Giglio and Robert Abela were defence counsel.
