The next Heritage Trail on April 15 will take in Dingli Cliffs, Buskett Gardens and the National Museum of Natural History in Mdina, with its extensive collection of stuffed birds and mammals.

Heritage Malta's Heritage Trails are among the most popular of all the activities carried out under their banner. They are nearly all over-subscribed, so early pre-booking is absolutely essential. This next trail, which will be entitled Discovering Our Natural Treasures Heritage Trail, will focus on the geology, ecology, flora and fauna of the areas covered. The three locations are all very different, the towering limestone cliffs at Dingli rise to over 700 feet above the sea and are home to a number of species of marine plant life and sea birds. At some points the cliffs become less steep and there are even tiered fields present.

Buskett Gardens are situated in a fertile valley just below the town of Rabat. The name Buskett apparently derives from the Italian word Boschetto, which appropriately means pine forest. Buskett is one of the greenest areas in Malta and the gardens are home to numerous cultivated citrus trees. Apart from the pines, of which there are several varieties, Buskett also sustains a large variety of wild woodland plants.

The National Museum of Natural History briefly enjoyed a moment of notoriety in 2004, when the tiny piece of moon rock displayed there, was stolen. But this isolated felony should not be allowed to detract from the myriad of geological and preserved exhibits housed within the former Vilhena Palace, just inside the main gate of Mdina. The museum will provide an appropriate last stop on Heritage Malta's latest Heritage Trail.

Tickets will cost Lm5 each and are available from Heritage Malta Head Office in Valletta. Phone: 2295 4312. The starting point will be made known when booking your place on the trail.
