The British Council and National Book Council have selected Christopher Gruppetta, to represent Malta as a national finalist for the International Young Publisher of the Year award this month. This highly prestigious prize is a collaborative award given annually by The British Council and the London Book Fair, which is currently taking place. The award's aim is to strengthen creative leadership, networking and capacity building in the international publishing industry, particularly in transitional economies.
Candidates for the award are selected on the basis of their contribution to the development, and their leadership potential within the publishing sector of their particular country. The other participating countries in 2007 are: Argentina, Egypt, Hungary, India, Romania, Slovenia, South Africa and Syria.
The finalists will travel to the UK to take part in a 10-day tour of the UK publishing sector and also to attend the London Book Fair, where they will compete for the International Young Publisher of the Year award.
Dr Gruppetta has been director of publishing at Merlin Library since 2000 and a postgraduate student on the MSc Publishing Studies at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.
