Those who have yet to memorise their current postcode need not bother because it is going to change.

Maltapost yesterday officially launched its marketing campaign to announce the introduction of new alphanumeric postcodes. They will be made up of three letters and four digits, for instance SLM 1217.

The new postcodes will complement the restructuring of the company's distribution system and will enable the system to cope better with the country's rapidly changing infrastructure, Maltapost CEO Joseph Gafa' said at a press conference.

The previous system was less flexible than the new one, as it required the company to inform residents in areas where new development was taking place, that their code had changed.

"With the new system we will not need to change the codes for a very long time," said Mr Gafa'. Furthermore, the new system would help make the service more efficient.

The company will be launching a full-blown information campaign on the media in the coming weeks and will send information leaflets to every home. A list of towns and villages, with streets and their corresponding postcodes, has been placed on the company's website www.maltapost.com.

More information can be obtained from the company's customer care unit on free phone number 80072244 or on 21224421 between 8 a.m. and 3.30 p.m., at Maltapost retail outlets or via e-mail at info@maltapost.com.
