Palace Armoury weapons acquire mannequins
By the end of the year, the Palace Armoury will have 15 life-size models in full armour that will enhance the splendour of the weapons and armour on display. This will allow visitors to fully appreciate these magnificent relics.
The life-size mannequins are the result of a three-year collaboration, among other important initiatives, that has been signed recently between GasanMamo Insurance Ltd and Heritage Malta.
The funds have made it possible for Heritage Malta to acquire these models and clothe them in full armour, with all the fine detail right down to the leather used for the boots.
Speaking during a press conference to mark the occasion, GasanMamo Insurance Ltd managing director Albert P. Mamo said that this partnership endorses the company's objective to implement corporate social responsibility towards contributing to the restoration and preservation of our national heritage.
"Our heritage belongs to each one of us. By supporting Heritage Malta in their continuous endeavours, we contribute towards making our heritage accessible to all."
Dr Mario Tabone, chairman of Heritage Malta, added that the sponsorship enables Heritage Malta to give our heritage and our past the best possible future.
Refurbished UCB outlet
United Colors of Benetton (UCB) at the Embassy in Valletta (below) reopened its doors recently with a completely refreshed look. The outlet is now completely dedicated to womenswear.
"We had such a positive response to our women's collections last season, both at UCB and Sisley, that we felt it was important to offer the wider collection at our Embassy outlet, since it is strategically located in Malta's retail capital," a brand representative said.
The UCB women's collection is characterised this season by light, fresh, fuss-free glamour offering linens, suits, denims and funwear in the usual bright palette of UCB colours. The main hues of the season range from bright coral, turquoise and yellow to the more subtle tones of pale pink and sage green.
The Embassy outlet also includes a limited selection of Sisley best sellers as well as important pieces of the season in the more subtle tones of blue, beige and navy. Slightly more sophisticated yet easy to wear, the Sisley collection adds a touch of glamour to any wardrobe.
Both UCB and Sisley collections are completed by a great range of accessories which are also available at the Valletta store.

Merchants Street becomes children's playground
Thousands of children and their parents jam-packed Merchants Street last Sunday for three hours of non-stop free entertainment, drinks, eats and treats.
Okaidi, the world acclaimed kidswear chain, who has just opened a megastore incorporating a children's play-area in Merchants Street (ex-Morgan) transformed this Valletta arterial street into a fun-fare type of playground, where life-size Disney Retuned Characters, and is-Sur Gawdenz and Mary entertained and charmed all those present.
A good number of parents seized the opportunity to capture their children and their idols on film.
This novel and highly successful event was made even more festive by clowns, face painters and balloon modellers, and a bouncy castle, which luckily withstood the tough treatment the children meted out.
All the children's wasted energy had to be replenished and "top-ups" were also provided by means of free refreshments, popcorn, candy floss and Zuegg juices and Weetos Cereals, which were kindly supplied by Paolo Bonnici Ltd.
Parents genuinely appreciated the Okaidi kidswear initiative, which helped to enamour children to Valletta, as a frequently repeated remark from those present was that Valletta could be fun for children as well.
The Okaidi Merchants Street Party turned out to be such a huge success that Okaidi intends to repeat the event next year on an even better and bigger scale.
Chaine des Rotisseurs organise diner amical
A diner amical was held at the Le Méridien St Julian's in Balluta on March 23 by the Maltese branch of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, the international gastronomic association which has its international headquarters in Paris.
The Bailliage National de Malte, as the branch is known, holds regular functions at various establishments in Malta with proven fine cuisine.
The Chaine originated in France in 1248 under King Louis IX, later known as St Louis, and was reconstituted to its present form in 1950.
It is dedicated to bringing together professional members of the catering industry and non-professionals, worldwide, who appreciate and have a mutual interest in cuisine, wines and fine dining. Professional Chaine members such as hotels and restaurants will be entitled to display the Chaine logo at their establishment and become acknowledged for their high standard throughout the world via the organisation's Website.
The dinner at Le Méridien St Julian's was hosted by the general manager, Michael Shannon. The dinner was prepared with artistic culinary flair by resident executive chef Andy Gaskin, his lieutenants Darren Edwards and Steve Mallia, and impeccably served by the waiting staff. The wine was supplied by Philippe Martinet Fine Wines Ltd.
After a champagne reception, dinner was served, comprising seared foie gras accompanied by vintage wine Chateau Canon Moueix 2000, followed by a local prawn bisque served with nettle foam with fine Chateau Canteleys 2003 Graves Blanc. This was followed by rack of lamb, celeriac dauphinoise, offal pie and truffle jus accompanied by Chateau Bourgneuf 2002 Pomerol.
The dessert described as Chocolate "six senses" was an extravaganza of kumquat, vanilla, pistachio, liquorice, orange and pastis. This was accompaned by a cheese platter and vintage Port wine.
The organiser of the Bailliage functions, chancelier Chev. Charles A. Gatt, the bailli délégué Colin A. Best and conseiller gastronomique, Chev. Dr Joseph Xuereb, heaped praise on the venue, the ambience, the food and the service.

Decoding an island's identity
Contemporary artist Vince Caruana will feature his latest collection of contemporary landscapes at Gallery G. His fourth solo exhibition is entitled "Diagnosis: decoding an island's identity".
The artist's varied impressions, constructed from transparent overlapping geometrical planes, rise to form an architecture against the backdrop of a similarly constructed atmosphere, with light pouring through them as if they were a series of gauzy veils.
His works depict the interface between the real landscape and the artist-created landscape, bridging the traditional with contemporary representation. Caruana's luminous landscapes combine a palette of vibrant colours, light and composition with painterly elegance.
Caruana was conferred his Masters in Visual Arts from the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence. Earlier on he studied arts at the Malta Schools of Arts and Scranton College of Arts of Pennsylvania (US). Despite his relatively young age, Caruana has exhibited both locally and internationally, and his works are included in numerous private and public collections. Most recently, four of his paintings were commissioned to be reproduced as limited edition prints by one of Malta's leading mobile/phone operator.
The exhibition can be viewed from Saturday until May 4, on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The exhibition is sponsored by Charts Investments Management Services, BoV, Attard & Co. with VoloRosso wines, and Ghajnsielem council.

President visits Micallef-Cilia exhibition
President Eddie Fenech Adami last Tuesday visited the exhibition by artist Luciano Micallef and photographer Daniel Cilia, currently on show at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta. The exhibition was inaugurated on March 28.
The President was welcomed by the Ambassador of Italy, Dr Paolo Andrea Trabalza, the director of the Institute, Dr Anna Maria di Marco, and by the two artists, who showed Dr Fenech Adami around, explaining aspects of their works, which they created purposely for the exhibition.
Dr Fenech Adami, in the course of his visit, recalled the centuries-old common cultural roots, besides the deep friendship and close collaboration, which for decades have marked relations between Malta and Italy.
The exhibition, which has long been prospected by Dr di Marco, and now finally realised, is not only a friendly homage to two well-known Maltese artists, who together with others, have received professional training in Italy with the support of the Italian government, but is also an important occasion to realise, with great satisfaction, how the periods of study in Italy have contribute to enrich the two artists' respective personality from the cultural and intellectual aspect.
