A Renault Clio, parked in St Nicholas Street, Valletta, became the latest in a long list of cars to go up in flames, on Tuesday night.
The rear of another vehicle was also damaged in the blaze. No one was injured in the incident.
The fire, which broke out soon after midnight, was extinguished by firefighters from the Civil Protection Department.
Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona appointed a team of court experts to assist in the inquiry.
A vehicle belonging to Floriana councilor Brian Zammit was destroyed by fire on Monday night and the police said they were not ruling out arson. The Mitsubishi Pajero was parked in Emanuel S. Tonna Street, Floriana.
More than 15 cars have been damaged or destroyed by fire so far this year.
The police suspect that arsonists have been the cause of the majority of the fires.
Police Commissioner John Rizzo told the media last week the police were striving to establish the motives in the cases of suspected arson. He said the reasons could be various, including insurance fraud and acts of vengeance, recalling the spate of arson attacks associated with the illegal immigrants issue last year.
However, he said, the police had to be careful before drawing any conclusions.
