I keep trying to understand why the Nationalist Party keeps losing every local councils election. We are a very demanding people and the government is delivering.
Would we ever have imagined that we would get to where we are today?
Thanks to the Nationalist government we have all the liberties and rights that every European citizen enjoys. What else could we ask for?
We have joined the European Union. We shall have the largest IT centre in Europe with SmartCity Malta. We can travel to anywhere in the world with no restrictions. We can also travel using low-cost airlines.
Lots of families have improved their lifestyle thanks to the property boom. We never saw so many luxury cars and luxury properties as we have seen over the last years. We have beautiful roads and bypasses.
We have huge supermarkets that offer cheaper prices and a much wider choice than in the 1980s. We have anything we want at any price.
We're soon going to have a new hospital with new state-of-the-art equipment. Our children have a bright future with the possibility of working abroad without any restrictions. Business is good. Upgrade projects are taking place all over the island. Property in the south has increased in value more than expected. There is also the regeneration of Valletta and the Three Cities.
These are just a few of the advantages we have today. We must keep in mind that progress has its own problems too, which could mean a few more taxes.
For the first time the government has registered a surplus rather than a deficit and we have seen companies like Gozo Channel looking to the future with optimism. It was in the national interest that certain companies that were a burden on the government to close down but there are many job openings which such people can take advantage of.
It is about time we realise we cannot just stay at home staring at the TV and expect the government to pay us. In today's world, the government must do something to get the unemployed out of their home and become productive. I never saw as many job openings as I have seen in the classified section of the press this week.
The Gozo Tourism Association has expressed concern that low-cost airlines would take Maltese low-cost tourists to cheaper destinations rather than to Gozo. It is about time the Gozitans start treating the Maltese as tourists and not try cheat them, as many Gozitans are doing over and over again. I do not know a Maltese person who has been to Gozo and does not have a story to tell about bad or over-priced food and very expensive accommodation. If the Gozitans want the Maltese to keep returning, the GTA should inspect some of the restaurants there, especially in the more popular areas.
