Musical magic!

Here's you chance to see an innovative and interactive children's opera based on Mozart's The Magic Flute, an opera which will appeal to children and adults alike. The one-hour performance which is both a magical fairytale and an illustration of the triumph of good over evil, is based on the original libretto taken from an oriental fairytale.

Tamino, a young prince, is rescued from a gigantic serpent by three ladies. They give him a magic flute so he can rescue Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, from Sarastro, who according to them is a tyrant of monstrous cruelty.

However Tamino discovers, to his surprise, that Sarastro is the exact opposite of what he had been told. He meets Pamina and they fall in love but they have to surpass trials and submit to various tests before they can be together. The Queen of the Night tries her hardest to destroy Sarastro, and stops at nothing, even using her daughter, as a pawn.

Throughout the opera, Tamino is accompanied by the wild and colourful Papageno, the bird catcher, who in turn is looking for his love Papagena. Despite all the odds, love and goodness triumph.

The seven-piece live orchestra performs on stage, so you will be able to see the interaction between singers and musicians. Musical direction is by Sarah Spiteri, whilst theatre direction is in the hands of Toni Attard.

Performances are at the Manoel Theatre from April 20 to 23.
