The Maltese Council of Disabled Persons has welcomed the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Disabled People and its attached protocol by the government of Malta.

This step clearly indicates a clear commitment by Malta to protect and promote the rights of Maltese disabled people, the council said.

The UN Disability Convention is ground breaking as it deals with disability from a human rights perspective in contrast to traditional approaches, which have equated such rights with medical intervention, charity or social welfare, the council said.

As the final stage of the process is the ratification of the UN Convention, the council has urged the government to contribute positively to its ratification.
