Focus on Good Friday processions in Malta and Spain

Common characteristics that can be observed in Good Friday processions held both in Malta and in Spain are highlighted in a photographic display, entitled Good Friday Dresses Statuary From Malta And Spain, being held at the Inquisitor's Palace, Vittoriosa.

The exhibition shows Christ and the Virgin Mary as the main protagonists on Good Friday and the focus in both Malta and Spain is on the physical manifestations of sorrow such as weeping.

In Spain, the Virgin Mary is also presented as the mourning mother wearing black who grieves the death of her son in solitude.

Good Friday processions in Spain and Malta have a lot of common characteristics. People carry banners and symbols of the Passion of Christ. Candles create a dramatic effect and some people carry heavy chains attached to their feet.

A simple cassock in white or dark colours is the basic costume and many wear hoods over their head to hide their identity.
