In his memoirs, former Labour minister Lino Spiteri wrote that he resigned from Finance Minister during the last Labour government in 1996 because he could not continue to live a lie and that contesting the 1996 election was a mistake.

Yet he did not find it difficult to stay on as Labour minister during the turbulent period of the Labour administration under Dom Mintoff and Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. Was the real reason for his resignation the removal of Vat or was it that he could not stomach forming part of a Cabinet of ministers headed by the person who stole the leadership from him?

But as the author said in his book, it is only the cook who knows what is in the cooking pan.
