Euro 2008 tickets: Tickets for the 2008 European Championship were 30 times oversubscribed after seats went on sale in the first round of applications. The huge demand means the second round of sales has been abandoned. Almost 600,000 fans from 142 countries had ordered 10.4 million tickets when the deadline expired on March 31 - 18 times more than for the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

Newcastle: Newcastle unveiled plans yesterday for a £300 million development of a hotel and conference centre around their St James' Park ground. Called 'Number 1 St James' Park', the Premier League club said funding would be "completely independent of the football club's revenues" and could lead to the ground's capacity rising from 52,400 to a minimum target of 60,000.

Transfer talk: Manchester United director Bobby Charlton believes speculation about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo is unsettling the player and the club. "Ronaldo is having a marvellous season and he is enjoying himself at United," Charlton said. "I can see no reason at all why he should want to play for another club. It's really destabilising for both the club and the player to have all this speculation about his future."

Romario: Romario remained stuck on 999 goals after failing to score in Vasco da Gama's game against Botafogo on Sunday. Vasco went down 2-0 as the 41-year-old was forced to continue the wait to emulate Pele by scoring 1,000 goals in his career. Nearly 60,000 watched the Carioca championship match, a competition where few games have attracted crowds of more than 5,000, in the hope of seeing Romario make history.

Quinn PAYS: Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has paid £8,000 to get about 80 fans home by taxi from Bristol after they were turned off a plane for alleged rowdy behaviour, several hours after second division Sunderland's 1-0 win at Cardiff City. Quinn paid for a fleet of 14 taxis to take the supporters back to Sunderland, some 300 miles away.

MFA Division Three: Mdina-Pembroke 0-0; Kalkara-Gzira 2-0.

In Italy: Serie C1(B) - Teramo-Gallipoli 0-2.

In England: Premier League - Aston Villa 1 (Agbonlahor 83)

Everton 1 (Lescott 15).
