As the European Union is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, it is worth pondering on the Nationalist Party's amazing vision, amply evident in the official declaration way back in 1979: namely that Malta is part of Europe and forming part of this impressive organisation was not only fundamental but our future.
Credit goes to then leader of the Nationalist Party, Eddie Fenech Adami, currently President of Malta, the erstwhile deputy leader and Minister for Foreign Affairs, President Emeritus Guido de Marco for his enormous task to revive political credibility in these islands after our application had been frozen, and also to his successor, Joe Borg, as Minister for Foreign Affairs, currently a European Commissioner, whose sterling work towards the realisation of our dream in seeing our application through can hardly be ignored. Not forgetting all those who had played their part in a long, thorny process.
To all of them our gratitude and appreciation. We are extremely proud of them.
