A motorist was yesterday cleared of trying to seriously injure a traffic police sergeant on duty but was fined Lm20 for disregarding the officer's orders.

Charles Agius, 36, had been charged with trying to injure the officer and ignoring his instructions on February 27, 2005.

Magistrate Audrey Demcoli heard that the incident occurred when PS Carmel Zammit was redirecting traffic in Qormi because a marathon race was in progress.

Mr Agius, who was driving a van, ignored the sergeant's orders and drove towards him hitting his shoulder with the van's side mirror.

The magistrate ruled that evidence, including the sergeant's testimony, did not show that Mr Agius had tried to seriously injure anyone. He did, however, disregard the police.

Police Inspector Angelo Gafà prosecuted.

Lawyer Franco Debono was defence counsel.
