Malta was one of the first countries to sign the United Nations Convention On The Rights of Persons With Disabilities, which opened for signatures yesterday.

The treaty aims to protect the rights of the world's 650 million persons with a disability by targeting various sectors, including education, accessibility, health, work, entertainment, participation in politics, equality and protection from discrimination. The convention demands real changes through effective legislation and a shift in attitude.

A protocol attached to the convention enables the setting up of a committee for the rights of persons with disabilities. This committee will receive petitions from those who do not find solutions in their own country.
