The International Fireworks Festival, to be held over four days between April 27 and 30 around Grand Harbour, will this year incorporate a food festival.

The whole event is being organised by the consortium Burning Spear, made up of Where's Everybody and Nexos Lighting.

Lou Bondì, director of Where's Everybody, said the festival will bring together Maltese and foreign fireworks' displays as well as Maltese and other types of cuisine.

The festival, launched yesterday, will include a cocktail of attractions, including the popular Ghanja tal-Poplu competition, Olivia Lewis's last concert before leaving for the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki, folklore groups and singers, and much more.

An arrangement has been made with ferry operators Captain Morgan so that those who do not wish to enter Valletta by car can watch the fireworks from aboard one of their boats, from Sliema or Vittoriosa.

Several fireworks companies will be taking part, including the Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory of Zurrieq, the St Joseph Fireworks Factory of Ghaxaq, Design Fireworks International from Austria and the Yung-Feng Firecrackers and Fireworks Co. Ltd from China.

Special guests include Orzella Fireworks Factory from Italy and last year's winners, the St Mary Fireworks Company of Mqabba.

The jury will consist of international pyrotechnical experts who will be working independently of the organisers.

Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech observed that events like these will continue to build Malta's reputation as an event-oriented destination.
