Italian 250cc rider Roberto Locatelli has been brought out of his medically-induced coma and is expected to return home to Italy soon, Spanish media reported yesterday.

The Gilera rider lost control of his bike and crashed into the guardrail during practice for the Spanish Grand Priz in Jerez on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital with head, facial and shoulder injuries, and a badly broken left ankle.

Locatelli underwent surgery on his ankle on Saturday and after a scan on Monday showed he was not suffering neurological damage, he was brought out of the coma.

He will be transferred to a hospital in Bologna to undergo sur-gery on his facial injuries.
