A man was jailed for 30 months for trafficking in heroin he sold to sustain his 11-year-long addiction.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano noted that 33-year-old Sean Paul Mckeown, of Zurrieq, pleaded guilty to trafficking in heroin on and before October 2006.

The magistrate also noted that Mr Mckeown had filed an early guilty plea, cooperated with the police and showed that he regretted his actions.

While pointing out that Mr Mckeown had been hooked on drugs since he was a teenager, the magistrate stressed that selling drugs, for whatever reason, could not be justified.

The magistrate jailed him for 30 months and fined him Lm300. He also ordered that the time Mr Mckeown spent in preventive custody be deducted from his jail term and recommended to the prison authorities to help him overcome his problem and start a rehabilitation programme as soon as possible.

Police Inspector Nezrin Grixti prosecuted.
