The General Workers' Union is demanding more information about the privatisation of Enemalta's gas division.

The union argued yesterday that EU directives on the right to information and consultation gave it a right to insist on having such information.

In a statement, the union said it wanted to know what concrete plans there were about the transfer of workers to the private firm that will be in charge of the gas division.

Contacted for a reaction, Enemalta chairman Alex Tranter said he had learned about such a request from The Times.

Once he received a request from the union, he added, he would have no objection to meeting the union's representatives and providing them with the information they were asking for.
