The 29-year-old woman who alleged she was raped in Lija, last week, is being investigated by the police after it was found that the allegation was false and that the rape story was invented by her, the police said yesterday.

The police said last week that preliminary investigations held after a report was filed had indicated that a woman was supposedly pushed into a van in Robert Samut Street and raped by a man. The woman was then taken to hospital.

A team of court experts were appointed to help Magistrate Edwina Grima in an inquiry she opened.

The rape report was made just days after a Maltese 26-year-old woman was raped in Marsa. Three Somalis and a Sudanese were eventually charged with the Marsa rape.
