All the world's cities are growing - and the quality of urban design in new areas is generally depressing. The problem often results from the lack of adequate attention to the design of public space. Outdoor landscape is our access to clean air and sunshine and provides us with gathering places where to encounter other people. It contributes vastly to our quality of life.

The Kamra tal-Periti (KTP) and the Anhalt University of Germany are organising a one-day seminar on "Landscape architecture in the design/build process" on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, Valletta. During the past three years, Anhalt University has been conducting studio work in Malta to introduce landscape architecture proposals and has now invited leading professionals in landscape architecture to add a professional perspective to the aca-demic one.

Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit and German Ambassador Karl Andreas Freiherr von Stenglin will open the seminar. Professor Arno Schmid, president of the German Chamber of Architects, will deliver a keynote speech on the potential role of landscape architecture in the design/build process of the restoration and conservation of the Maltese landscape.

Professor Schmid is former president of the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) after having served as president of the German Federation of Landscape Architecture (BDLA).

In addition, three landscape architects from Berlin and Milan will present current projects in Europe. The third session in the afternoon will be a panel discussion with all speakers, moderated by Robert Schäfer, editor-in-chief of two European journals for landscape architecture: TOPOS and Garten + Landschaft.

Current president of the chamber, David Felice, will close the event.

The seminar is open to the public and is free of charge. For more information, contact the KTP via e-mail: info@ktpmalta.com.
