In a recent media statement the Malta Federation of Industry (FOI) and the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise expressed their disapproval at the position taken by GRTU at the expense of the Malta Hotels and Restaurants' Association (MHRA). The GRTU's outburst at an MHRA event and its subsequent attacks on the same organisation were totally uncalled for.
Tourism is the lifeblood of the Maltese economy and the FOI and Chamber would prefer all stakeholders - Government, employers organisations and trade unions - to unified efforts to study and develop ways and means of developing the tourism sector in a way that ensures long-term growth and sustainability.
The two organisations also support the MHRA for its unrelenting efforts to seek a renewed impetus in tourism. MHRA pioneered consultation on the low-cost airline issue, which is one of the factors that may have contributed to the recent reversal in the downward trend in tourism figures.
The organisations augured that, in future, all constituted bodies act in unison on this and all other issues pertaining to the common good of all members represented and the nation at large.
