A fire simulation exercise was yesterday carried out on board the Logos II in Grand Harbour by members of the Civil Protection Department and its volunteers.
In collaboration with the captain, none of the ship's crew was aware of the fire simulation, Civil Protection director Peter Cordina said.
The exercise also involved a team of professionals, including the Emergency Response Team from St Luke's Hospital, while the police, the Armed Forces of Malta's Maritime Squadron, the Malta Maritime Authority and members of St John Ambulance, also collaborated.
The exercise was held between 8.30 and 10 a.m. The first step was to evacuate the ship until Civil Protection personnel arrived from Floriana, Kordin and Hal Far, and several ambulances arrived on site, as well as a patrol boat and a fire-fighting vessel.
A triage-unit was set up, where three injured people were treated.
Mr Cordina said the exercise demonstrated the good co-ordination between all those involved in the rescue operation, who worked under pressure and showed good communication.
