Is SmartCity being prepared as the new capital of Malta? I ask the question because so much seems to being put into this new project as a curtain raiser to SmartMalta, whatever that is. What about old Malta?

Will the proportionate investment be to the determent of Valletta and other parts of the island that are also in need of refurbishment and development?

While looking for property on the island over the past few months I cannot believe how many houses and premises I came across that are being left to crumble and, yet, prices remain so high and beyond the pocket of most young Maltese.

Maybe the plan is that Valletta can be Malta's version of Pompeii and become another glorious tourist attraction, even more glorious as the streets turn to rubble.

The island is already overpriced as far as property is concerned and I can see that this will do nothing but drive base prices higher, unless it is the government's intention to allow cheap ghettos to develop outside this first gated community.

I do hope all the new Smart-City buildings are constructed with windows that look inwards or only out to sea so that the occupiers will not have to acknowledge how the island is being allowed to run to ruin.
