Double trap shooter William Chetcuti failed to reach the barrage in the opening World Cup shoot of the year after hitting 133 clays in Santo Domingo earlier this week.

The winner was Sweden's Hakan Dahlby whose qualification score was 144. He finished with a 192 overall tally, just two clays short of the world record which belongs to Daniele di Spigno. The Italian had to settle for second place with 188 hits.

Dahlby twice finished second in World Cup shoots last year, in Kerville and Qinguyan. His victory in the Caribbean earned him a quota in next year's Olympics in Beijing.

Chetcuti's scores were 44, 46 and 43. He finished 21st overall. India's Ronjan Sodhi qualified to the final in sixth place with 140. He went on to finish third behind di Spigno with a total score of 187.

The qualification process was hit by a heavy rainstorm. As often happens in tropical countries, humidity followed the rain making conditions very unfavourable for all shooters.

American Josh Richmond, 21, was fourth, followed by China's Wang Nan who won a shoot-off for fifth place against Finland's Mikko Makitalo.
