St Luke's Hospital Infection Control Unit last year received 703 MRSA notifications which were isolated by the laboratory, Health Minister Louis Deguara said.

He told Labour MP Adrian Vassallo in reply to a parliamentary question that this did not necessarily mean that these were all cases of acute infection because the MRSA microbe could frequently colonise the body without causing illness. In these circumstances, it could contaminate clinical samples, such as urine and swabs which would show positive.
