The 50-hour 2007 Lyceum Bicycle Marathon gets underway tomorrow afternoon, culminating on Sunday evening hopefully with the biggest-ever proceeds which this year will go to the Dar tal-Providenza, in Siggiewi.
The funds will be used for the main kitchen modernisation project.
The annual event is being organised by an ad hoc committee at the Dun Guzepp Zammit (Brighella) Lyceum, Hamrun, where it is held, with the collaboration of the Association of Lyceum Past Students (ALPS) and the Sliema Boys Junior Lyceum.
All sectors of this year's organisational team have thought up new fund-raising efforts while retaining already-proven successful activities.
Besides the sponsored continuous riding of bicycles in the school's grounds, the programme between tomorrow and Sunday will feature talent shows, performances by some of the best artistes, tombola and shows of American, vintage and modified vehicles.
Every day there will be a science club, a party, a bazaar and a plants shop.
Besides taking part in raffles, visitors will be able to enjoy a pasta night on Saturday and a fully-stocked bar at all times, all proceeds going to the kitchen project.
On Sunday morning, the mobile blood transfusion unit will be parked outside the Lyceum for blood donation - probably the only activity around the marathon in which no money will change hands. Mass will be said at 9.30 a.m.
