The National Duathlon Championships have traditionally opened the triathlon season and this year will be no exception.
On Sunday, the Malta Triathlon Association will be holding the Duathlon Championships at Birzebbuga, next to the Freeport. The race, which consists of a first run of 5km, followed by a 30km cycle and finishing with a second 3km run, will be held along the newly-opened roads leading to the airport.
In the absence of Mark Zammit, currently training in Hungary, Dermot Galea, 2006 Triathlon and Duathlon champion, starts favourite to retain his titles. He should not have it all his own way, however, since an up-and-coming crop of youngsters, consisting mainly of Luke Bonnici and Keith Galea, are bound to offer a spirited challenge.
In the women's category, Michelle Wood, last year's duathlon champion, will undoubtedly face stiff opposition from Danica Spiteri, the triathlon champion.
Spiteri looks determined to give her best in view of her proclaimed aim to retain the Small States of Europe title in Cyprus in May.
Senior athlete, Chris Iwanik should win his category despite the ever increasing number of athletes who qualify for the Over 40s.
The MTA will be introducing some changes in an effort to lure more athletes to the sport. In particular, they will be introducing different venues and Sunday's new route should prove to be both challenging as well as attractive.
The race is sponsored by Kristal Water, Powerade and Plum Tree Restaurant.
