Michael Mifsud further strengthened his chances of holding down a regular place in the Coventry City team yesterday when hitting his side's second goal in a resounding 4-1 win over Barnsley.

Having earned Iain Dowie's nod to start his second game in succession following his man-of-the-match performance in the 2-1 derby win over Wolves on Tuesday, the 25-year-old Mifsud doubled Coventry's lead on 32 minutes. He scored with a volley from a left-wing cross by Marcus Hall.

Mifsud might have opened his account after just 12 minutes but his shot hit the inside of both posts before the ball dropped into the arms of Barnsley 'keeper Nick Colgan.

Jay Tabb put Coventry ahead on the half hour, Mifsud made it 2-0 two minutes later and then set up Dele Adebola for the Sky Blues' third goal. Adebola hit Coventry's fourth early in the second half before substitute Bobby Hassell headed a late consolation goal for Barnsley.

Coventry are 14th in the 24-team Championship, level with Plymouth Argyle on 52 points.
