The Church faces the challenge of finding a place within today's world of media pluralism so that it can transmit the word of God, Archbishop Paul Cremona said yesterday.

It Radju RTK's role to be creative and ensure that this was done, and it was crucial that the Church built a clear Christian identity, Mgr Cremona said during a conference held to mark the radio station's 15th anniversary.

Owned by the local Catholic Church, the station went on air on March 14, 1992.

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech said that RTK ought to offer a voice to those who did not have one and ought to help the suffering and uneducated listeners. Programmes aired on RTK should offer more than information; they should also provide a space where different opinions are shared, even those that may disagree with the Church, he said.

Station chairman Victor Formosa said that since its launch, RTK was always one of the main stations on the island.

He said that RTK's challenge, within the next 15 years, would be to remain relevant in today's world and to alter its way of transmitting human and Christian values. He added that RTK was a pillar of solidarity for families in need and Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

RTK's first-ever chairman, Fr Joe Borg, stressed the importance of the education of people who work in the media and proposed the drafting of an inter-diocesan pastoral plan on the way the Church should make use of the media.
