It was indeed sad to read about Mr Joe DeGiovanni's resignation as general secretary of the Malta Union of Teachers. His name had become synonymous with that of the MUT and you could not mention one without thinking of the other.

Mr DeGiovanni's voice in the MUT was the voice of reason. He brought to difficult situations a humaneness which helped to calm things down and make sensible decisions possible.

MUT members will always think of him as a person who understood their particular problems and led them carefully through the intricacies of the bureaucratic system towards a solution. The decision to leave must have pained him as much as I am sure it will pain MUT members.

Which is why the terse announcement contained in the latest MUT circular, that the general secretary expounded on the reasons leading to his resignation in his letter of resignation, is unsatisfactory. The MUT has a duty towards its members to tell them why the general secretary felt constrained to leave a post which he loved and to which he had dedicated 16 years of his life.
