The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its European group, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), yesterday called on the government to protect journalists after the recent attacks on members of the media covering a protest by hunters and trappers, in Valletta.
The two federations are backing a call by their affiliate, the Institute of Maltese Journalists, for the authorities to take action against those responsible for the attacks on journalists reporting the March 7 protest, when bottles and stones were thrown at the police and the media.
"These recent attacks on journalists show that protesters feel they can attack reporters and photographers with impunity," Arne KÃnig, EFJ chairman, said.
"This intimidation and violence against journalists on assignment is a serious threat to the independent media in Malta."
