I find it hard to reconcile myself with the idea that for the Maltese anything connected to churches, religion, or the village patron saint's statue is worth preserving as national heritage!

For a clergyman in Gozo (Fr George Mercieca, March 10) to lash out against soldiers doing the bidding of Heritage Malta in a noble brazen attempt to consolidate what's left of Maltese military heritage is like calling them vandals or heritage rapists when other bits of Maltese heritage continue to be bulldozed with unchecked condoning of Mepa and property speculators.

Heritage Malta, the Armed Forces of Malta, and the NGO Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna when roped in, deserve all the praises they can get in their efforts to preserve for posterity Maltese military heritage. It's a pity that visions of Maltese tourism remain limited to the picture postcard island scene of church, sun, sand and beach surf, when there are significant military gems that deserve a better platform of attention and promotion by entities like the MTA.
