Malta, together with Greece and Cyprus, has once again come under fire over ship safety as EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot said the three countries were "dragging their feet".

According to Mr Barrot, the three states are the "least inclined" to accept seven laws that have been proposed making for greater security at sea with regard to oil spills.

Speaking to Agence France Presse, Mr Barrot also targeted "unnamed flag states" that were hiding mediocre ships.

Mr Barrot said Brussels will not wait for another oil disaster.
