Investment, Industry and IT Minister Austin Gatt has discussed the SmartCity project at a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise led by Victor A. Galea.
Mr Galea said that this unique project will make the country the EU flagship in ICT, supporting the internationalisation of Malta, and attracting global ICT leaders to the island.
Mr Galea referred to the 5,600 jobs being targeted, of which 65 per cent will be in ICT, but said the chamber would support greater efforts to ensure that the educational institutions can produce the required ICT complement.
On the other hand, he expressed concern at the possible drain of ICT qualified personnel who would be looking at SmartCity for job opportunities.
The chamber expected that the fast-track processing being afforded to SmartCity will also be made available to local businesses.
