I thank Mr Revel Barker for his letter on global warming (The Sunday Times, March 4) which made my Sunday morning brighter than usual. I share his views: many years ago I had the good fortune of meeting one of the UK's top scientists. It was at the time when global warming hadn't yet become a household word.
This gentleman said that a group of scientists had coined "global warming" and will undoubtedly make quite a bit of money from it! (Al Gore et al!) He then went on to expound this topic. I didn't need much convincing - I was a disciple of his already.
Suffice it to say, many times, when there is some ecological disaster some learned scientists will come forward and make a prediction that this will take so many years to clear.
Instead of 40 years, as predicted in the oil spill near Dover, two years later Mother Earth had dealt with it and it disappeared. No scientist apologised for this gross error of judgment. It seems some scientists really believe they can control the earth and its behaviour. They wish to but they can't. It is not man- made.
I am all for keeping the environment clean, but for health reasons not for global warming reasons. I have really enjoyed this warm winter weather as we all did 54 years ago.
