The Environment Minister has sanctioned an Ornis Committee recommendation to bar finch trapping and the shooting of ducks from sea craft in spring.

In a statement, Minister George Pullicino noted also the suggestion by Ornis to meet the established targets of the EU accession treaty, with the assistance of the trappers.

Malta's negotiations with the EU had clearly established that finch trapping could take place only in autumn because there was no justification for the government to open the season in spring.

Nevertheless, turtle dove and quail trappers will be able to practice their pastime between March 26 and May 20.

Hunting for turtle dove and quail will be permitted between April 10 and May 20.

The committee had previously recommended to the minister that the hunting of quail be permitted between April 1 and May 10 and of turtle dove between April 10 and May 20.
