Following the incidents which occurred during the hunters' and trappers' protest march held in Valletta last Wednesday during which some demonstrators attacked the police and the media, my question is: "Can these people be trusted with a gun in their hands?" Bottles and stones were hurled, reporters were assaulted and it was reported that, in spite of the strong police presence, several of the hunters carried guns.
They said they were provoked. And this merely because the police were doing their duty in attempting to maintain law and order while the journalists and photographers were there to report on the happenings as is their job and democratic right. Should people who are so easily provoked be licensed to carry a gun?
So there are supposed to be over 7,000 hunters and trappers on our little island and that's 7,000 too many. But what about the rest of us, the other 390,000 who have the right to roam freely in what's left of our countryside without being in fear of our lives and that of the poor defenceless birds?
