Meat production last year amounted to 13.6 thousand tonnes, down by 8.4 per cent from 14.8 thousand tonnes in 2005, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Fewer pigs (-4.3 per cent) and broilers (-3.8 per cent) slaughtered, led to pig and broiler meat sliding by 7.6 per cent and 12.9 per cent respectively.

The slaughtering producer value stood at Lm 9.7 million, a fall of 6.6 per cent, as a result of fewer pigs and broilers slaughtered.

Meat production in the fourth quarter of last year amounted to 3,832 tonnes, representing a drop of 0.3 per cent over the comparative period last year.

The slaughtering producer value increased by 0.4 per cent to Lm 2.7 million.
