While I sympathise with the position of having to pay £44 in excess baggage fees, I don't feel that Mark Sammut (Cheaper Airfares?, March 5) has made a fair comment as regards to the situation. In my experience when I travelled to the UK recently with Ryanair, I found that the website clearly stated under Fare Rules the following information:
Checked in baggage - 15kg per person; a baggage fee applies for each item of checked baggage.
No sharing of baggage allowance permitted (no infant allowance).
Excess baggage charged at £5.50/€8 per kilo or local currency equivalent. The maximum size of cabin hand baggage cannot exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (20 x 14 x 9ins).
Clearly "no sharing of baggage allowance" means that luggage weight pooling is not allowed; whether for family members or otherwise.
This information was displayed quite clearly on the "summary" page after requesting dates and place of travel. In fact to continue with the booking process one has to accept that they have "read and accepted Ryanair's terms and conditions". Which it seems that Mr Sammut may have omitted to do.
Surely a carrier is entitled to impose its own conditions of carriage (as long as it is within IATA rules) and it is up to the customer to decide whether they want to choose that service or not?
I would like to add that I found the staff and the service given by Ryanair in general, pleasant and efficient. In my opinion it's about time that Malta starts to offer a choice of low cost airlines to many destinations and not just a select few!
Incidentally in my case, the cost of checked-in baggage was €9 per round trip; hardly an "additional cost" that would make a world of difference to the fare! Keep it up Ryanair!
