Appreciation - Flt Lt Eric Price RAF Retd

Frederick R. Galea, Honorary Secretary, National War Museum Association, writes:

Eric Price served in the Royal Air Force during WWII and was stationed on Malta.

He was assigned to RAF Station Kalafrana with the Air/Sea Rescue Service that operated from there during the war years.

A few ASR High Speed Launches (HSLs) were stationed at Kalafrana initially and shortly afterwards a second base was opened up to the north of the island at St Paul's Bay, below the Vecca Restaurant, at Sunderland House which still stands.

The jetty also still survives although lengthened postwar. Sadly, RAF Station Kalafrana is no more because it has been covered by tons of concrete below the Freeport.

Eric is believed to have been Malta's most notable "skipper" on the launches and had command mainly of HSL107 which was responsible for 85 pick-ups (Allied and Axis aircrew recovered from the sea) on its own.

In his early days at Kalafrana, Eric made about 10 rescues before he took HSL107 up to St Paul's Bay to open the ASR Base and become its Commanding Officer. As the war progressed, he increased his rescue tally to about 80, but the correct figure is not known because he never wished to talk about this personal aspect.

At Malta, HSL107, a 64-foot British Power Boat Company launch, was later joined by newer 63-foot BPBC launches HSLs128, 129 and 166.

HSL100, an army boat was also roped in for duty when HSL129 was shot-at by Messerschmitt Bf109s, with the loss to many of her crew and later the launch itself.

For a while, a Sliema Base was in operation at the Ferries, more or less where the Captain Morgan boats tie-up stern-to the quay.

Eric is survived by his ex-RAF sons Carlos and Barry, and Keith who is retired from the army.

Eric Price who born on February 12, 1910, passed away on February 28. A memorial service will be held in Liverpool tomorrow.
