The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses yesterday stepped up pressure for support staff to be provided at St Luke's Hospital.

It said it would resort to industrial action if by tomorrow week staff is not provided.

The lack of support staff was causing an "exaggerated" workload for nurses and midwives. It was also resulting in a lack of care for patients.

MUMN general secretary Colin Galea said the union could not understand how four months prior to the move to Mater Dei support staff had not been employed.

Replies to questions sent by The Times to the Health Division are expected today.
