Investments Minister Austin Gatt yesterday met representatives of the Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises - GRTU to discuss the SmartCity project.

He said the economic effect of the $300 million project would be enormous, adding that he would be meeting the other constituted bodies to discuss the details.

Dubai-based Tecom Investments is behind the project, which will transform the delapidated Ricasoli Industrial Estate into a state-of-the-art ICT and media city based on the models of Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, generating thousands of jobs in the process.

GRTU president Paul Abela said the chamber was in favour of SmartCity, adding that the project would have a big ripple effect on the economy.
