Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg said the timing of his visit to Australia, to discuss the government proposals to extend Maltese citizenship to the second generation born abroad, was conditioned by the dates of the Commonwealth conference on local government which will be held in New Zealand at the end of the month. He would be deputising for the prime minister as Malta has the current presidency of the organisation. Dr Borg was answering a parliamentary question by Opposition Foreign Affairs spokesman Leo Brincat. He said that before proceeding to Auckland, he would be stopping in Australia to have talks with the Maltese communities on the proposed change in the citizenship legislation.

Talks were also planned on state and federal levels.
